The Games that Rocked my 2008 (part 2 of 4)

Continuing with what seemed to be a nice started the following months brought not much to my interest but, no complaints here, it allowed me to enjoy what I’ve already gotten so far.

April got me involved, deeply, with Rondo of Swords, a Nintendo DS  game. This is a game that to this day I still keep, a game I keep on going back to. Absolutely love it.

    rondos16

Rondo of Swords is in essence a simple, challenging and entertaining turn-based strategy game that dares to be different, and succeeds. Gameplay it’s divided into several parts: Story, where the characters converse; Battle, which uses a unique combat system; and Preparation, which allows you to develop your characters, form your party, and so on.

As the game progresses, the player will gather new allies and move the story forward. Depending on your actions and the characters you use in battle, the story can rondos7change, resulting in four possible endings.

I would like to point out that Rondo of Swords is, as any strategy game, difficult. Hard. When the game's at its best, a hard-fought victory feels like a tremendous accomplishment...and at worst, it feels arbitrary and unfair (1UP)

The Story goes like this: The Kingdom of Bretwalde: situated in the center of the continent of Bravord and surrounded on all sides by strong nations, it was established by a holy knight whose blade drove back the Darkness rondos6that threatened to engulf the land.

On this day in Bretwalde, the people are  mourning their recently fallen king with a solemn funeral.  But during the ceremony, the neighboring Grand Meir empire attacked without warning. One by one,the knights of Bretwalde fell to Grand Meir's forces. The few surviving knights, led by Serdic, escaped south to the Shalem Emirate Federation...

The tribes of Shalem were divided over what to do regarding Grand Meir's invasion of Bretwalde, when an unexpected rondos11visitor arrived: Princess Marie of Bretwalde, believed to be sequestered in a Veronan cloister. Her innocent visit ignited the situation: one of Shalem's tribes  attempted to capture the Princess in order to gain favor with Grand Meir, prompting Serdic to mobilize his forces. The Bretwalde Army was once again on the march...

His actions will shape the fate of the entire continent!

As I find myself entangled in Rondo of Swords, June got me interested in 3 new titles, Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures and Etrian Odyssey II:Heroes of Lagaard.

    etrian odyssey 2

Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard is a 3D dungeon crawler role-playing video game.

You slowly make your way up the trunk of a massive magical tree in order to reach a floating castle at the top while completing smaller quests along the way. The tree is represented by a series of vertically-stacked levels which are explored one at a time with frequent return trips to town in order to rest and resupply. You move a single "step" at a time, moving and turning in fixed increments. Time passes only when an action is taken, causing movement, encounters, and combat etrian_odyssey_enemyto all be entirely turn-based. Enemies are randomly generated and can’t be spotted in advance, although certain more powerful "FOEs" usually can be seen on the map and avoided if necessary. The game uses a first-person view to present the labyrinth using a combination of relatively simple 3D computer graphics for environments and single-frame 2D sprites for enemies.

Similar to early computer role-playing games that did not support automatic mapping, players of Etrian Odyssey II must maintain their own maps.

This game was so HAAAARRRRRRRDDDDD!!!!!!  So hard it’s not even funny. No way I finished this one.

lego_indiana_jonesLego Indiana Jones brought something more appealing to the general public. And something you can easily play with your kids and/or significant other (willing enabled).

The game allows players to recreate moments (albeit more humorously) from the first three Indiana Jones films. It features the same drop in/out co-operative play mode as seen in the Lego Star Wars video games, although it is restricted to local console play.

The game often follows the events in the lego-indiana-jones-xbox-360films, however, some scenes from the film have been altered to become more family friendly or just provide comic relief to the player.

In an effort to make the game more family friendly, all references to Nazis have been removed. Deaths are not nearly as graphic and, in the Temple of Doom, Mola Ram does not rip out a victim's heart.

Next in Part 3: Onslaught of games.

The Games that Rocked my 2008 (pre-amp)

2008 has been touted by many as being the greatest year for gamers. Why would you ask? Well, obviously your mileage might vary but, taking into account the great accolade of game releases that have populated 2008 there’s much to rejoice.

In the following posts I’ll be looking at the games that I have played in 2008 (along with a mini review of each of them) (sorry, no numbered scores to look at). The games my family played, what my kids loved playing, games that we played at parties, etc.

All in all 2008 was a great year for gaming entertainment. Let’s take a look at what made it so great.

    Christmas Advertising in full force

Yep yep yep, Christmas is here... virtually, almost there. And with it comes all the advertising that will drive US crazy. It will make our stomachs revolt by the immense amount of ads being seen, it will make us clamor for stuff we never thought it ever existed.

If you have kids they'll be pestering for days on end. Will you fall for it? Or better yet, how DEEP will you?

If you, like me, are into video games, you'll probably be aware of the vast catalog that's being "pumped" into our veins. In reality, and lets be frank here, there are way TOO MANY games.

Some titles will do well, but the majority will not. Just taking into consideration the fact that games lately take a while to finish there's virtually no time, lest we say money to be able to afford such great variety of choices.

As the title implies, I've myself started seeing the effects of that advertising, some of them just plain wrong.

Like, for example, some stuff you can find at Target (see below). I mean, have you ever seen a Xbox360 in such color? With a flipped Hard Drive? And a library of only Xbox 1 games??  How awesome (and wrong) is that?

    moz-screenshot-1

And that's not all, oh no. Check the picture bellow. What ever happened to the drop in price of the 360? And the fact that the Core has been faced out and instead replaced by the "Arcade" bundle for $270.00 ??  Apparently Target didn't get that memo.

    moz-screenshot-2

It makes me wonder...  aren't these companies keeping in touch with the console makers? And how does Microsoft's PR respond to things like these?  It really breaks my heart.

I captured all this pictures from Target's site on November 11th 2007.

    Happy holidays.

    Tempting

With the holiday season approaching, and ample variety of games to cater all ages, sizes and colors, and most importantly, a whole bunch of people, be it just friends or relatives or visitors who decry my interest in video games, I'm actually thinking of trying to bring these people "in" this season. Try to open them up to the Video Game side of entertainment.

I have tried in past instances to "ready up" at my kids' birthday parties by introducing games like Feeding Frenzy, or the minigames in Alien Hominid HD. The kids loved it, the adults... kind off.

    Feeding Frenzy Alien Hominid HD

At other events I've shown games like Zuma, Luxor 2, Lumines, Jewel Quest, etc... Again, kids were all over them, their parents... not so much. They seem to like the ideas behind those games but get easily frustrated once the difficulty ramps up. I've noticed though that the younger the parent the easier it is for them to get excited and interested about games. Kindda hard to appeal to those over 35 it seems.

Zuma Luxor 2 Lumines Live Jewel Quest

So this season, as stated previously, I feel temted to try to bridge that generational gap. That of course is easier said that done.

What games would/will qualify to such task? Will kids and their parents feel compelled to play together? Hmmm... I think there's one game that might actually do that. And if it doesn't I'll have to say I'll probably wasted my precious $60 bucks.

Scene It?What game will I use? Something that it's coming Nov 7th as far as I know. That game is called: Scene it! Yep, that's the one I'll use. Hopefully those "big button" controllers will make people feel less intimidated.Big Button Controllers (Actually I've heard somewhere there might be an update coming to be able to use those same controllers to play Uno??)

Whichever the case might be, this is an experiment I'm willing to make. Let's see if Mcsft's plans work out well in my favor.

    May 10

    How it plays

It all comes down to how it plays.  Well, showing off a stick, recording and playing all at the same time is not the best way to proceed into such endeavor but hey, what can I do. Here's a couple of clips that show how the LEDs were implemented in the design.

    May 06

    It's a wrap

The underside cover finally dried up and was able to seal the box. Here's how it looks.

    May 03

    About time.

Ok, so after adding the "Back" button and retesting everything has worked just fine. I just finished running the cables to the connectors and afixing the PCB to the box, doing a final test and...  it's good to go!!

Later on I'll do a complete walk through of how the process went, what have I learned, what mistakes I've made, etc.

For now here are some more pics.

    The final countdown...

     I cannot believe my luck.........

So finally my 360 arrived a few minutes ago... YES!!!  (Kudos to Mcsft cuz the whole ordeal took just 8 days to get it back!!)

Pretested the controller and everything works as planned. YES!!!

I'm right now adding the "Back" button. I thought It wouldn't matter but I was asked to press "back" to continue on SFII so... gotta add it. tongue.gif And as soon as that's done I'll install the PCB on the box and connect everything to run a final test.

    Expect more media later tonight.

    What a beautiful day...
    May 02

    Almost there.

So yep, the box is finished, painted, the buttons, stick, and decal already installed. The wiring on the controller is finished too but since I don't have a 360 yet I could only test the power button, which works by the way.

I did however have to get rid of the rumble motors as the whole package was being a pain to fit in. Anyway I'm not sure how rumble would work so... If something had to go that was it. To make up for the lack or rumble I added two LEDs connected to where the motors would go so whenever the rumble would go on the LEDs will flash... will it work???

I did get a call from UPS telling me my 360 is coming back from repair tomorrow! That's good news (I hope) If indeed arrives tomorrow then I'll do some testing on the controller. And if everything goes right you'll see the rest of the pictures and possibly some video (over the weekend) of the thing in action.

What I was trying to do was salvage a quasi dead 360 wireless controller of which buttons used to "stick" and were non responsive. So instead of throwing it out I tried to do something with it, and that's where the decision of making an arcade type controller came about. I decided to go for a small footprint, the most compact thing I could come up with yet that would allow me to have a Happ Stick and 8 Pushbuttons, plus the PCB of the original 360 wireless controller in it. How will it turn out? Will I succeed? Only time will tell. Time as in like... tomorrow, if I get my 360 back...  :P

Below are the pictures of the layout mockup as well as the "wired" controller as originally intended to be used.
    April 27

    The real job...

Man, what a day. The last backordered pushbutton arrived today. Went on a shopping spree trying to get everything I need for the project. HomeDepot, ACE Hardware and Radio Shack have been my stops for the day.

And so... the design has been finalized and I got to sit down and work on it.

For the box I decided to go for a small footprint. I guess the bigger the better but... since this is my first project small will do. Actually going for a small footprint has proved to be a challenge. Things worked very nicely on paper but not so much in reality. Everything fits very tightly and might end up relocating a button.

In the end I worked a little bit on wiring the controller. I have to admit I suck at soldering. I busted 3 contacts and had to search for substitute soldering points.  Worse of all, in the mid of soldering I applied hot glue to the connections to secure them not realizing I haven't tested the controller yet.  From this point on anything can happen. I do hope for the best but... we'll see.  Damm me.

    Project of the moment

First ever attempt at making my own Arcade Style wireless Joystick controller for the 360.

Will I be able to finish it? Will it work? How will it turn out?

Stay tunned as more is bound to come.
    April 24

    Build you own Joystick??

We all know how bad the D-pad on the 360 controller is for fighting games and 2D (retro) games in general. Surprisingly enough a year and a half after launch Microsoft has not yet released a decent arcade stick. (No, the Madcatz doesn't count you silly...) Something in the likes of the Street Fighter Anniversary Edition Stick that was released for the Original Xbox.

So, where am I going with this? Well, I just happen to have shipped my 360 for repair (dreaded ring of death) and with 3-4 weeks without gaming ahead of me, and a quasi dead controller... I've decided I'm gonna build my own Arcade Style Joystick.

Have any of you ever hacked a 360 controller? Built your own Stick? Do you have any suggestions or tips that would streamline the process? Do you wanna share your projects? Would love to see.

For my project I'm using Happ Competition Pushbuttons and Joystick, a custom built box and a wireless original 360 controller.

If you have any info on how to use illuminated pushbuttons with a hacked 360 controller please let me know!!!  I haven't been able to come up with a workaround myself.

Thanks!!  And hope to hear from you!!

    Eternity's Child Update

I've been tracking and waiting for news on this game for a while and in waiting for the site to go live well, you know, April is here and the purported "Website coming March" is still there. So what's the deal?  As per Luc Bernard's own words "I must admit that I have been lazy, but I'm concentrating on the game"

Can we expect anything anytime soon? Very soon indeed, as we'll see some news released this month.

I'm really looking forward to the game, I think the art design is awesome and really, it's been a long time since a platformer has been made properly.

Thanks Luc for the heads up. Please someone starts building up the Hype on this game.

    Missing Gem?

Footage from a possibly XBLA game, Eternity's Child.

Not much is known of this game but reports go as saying its release is stated for 2007. I do hope this comes to XBLA as I love Sidescroller Platform games. Specially the ones properly made. The game looks rather pretty too. Certainly an engaging art design.

"Games I have good memories of" Ep. 2

Back in 1994 Sega released Dynamite Headdy on the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis), a platform/action game in which you play as the star puppet Headdy, who can attack his enemies by shooting his detachable head at them.

Headdy is the star of the Treasure Theatre production of Dynamite Headdy. He has come to North Town from the country in order to visit his friends HeadCase, HangMan and Beau, but arrives to find that the evil puppet king Dark Demon is in the midst of attacking the puppet town to select which of the peaceful toys should live and which should be converted into his evil minions. Headdy is captured by the Robo-Collector and rejected by D.D.'s forces, and is dropped into the dust cargo to be thrown into the incinerator. However, Headdy escapes the clutches of Dark Demon's minions and sets off to defeat the evil king.

However, trouble is afoot. Not only is the puppet world filled with Dark Demon's minions, but to reach the evil overlord's castle Headdy must defeat Dark Demon's Keymasters, who serve as the king's elite guard. To make matters worse, Headdy is followed by his lifelong rival Trouble Bruin, a puppet jealous of Headdy's success. Bruin wants to be the star instead of Headdy, and will stop at nothing to get rid of him.

The game is played over a series of "scenes" and "acts", the end of which is often typified by a big boss battle. Headdy's special power is his launchable head. This can be fired in eight directions: up and down, left and right, and the four diagonals in between. Launching it at enemies can damage or destroy them.

His head can also be used to hold on to a "HangMan", a character that acts like a hook. By grabbing a HangMan with your head, the player can then use it to hurl themselves in its direction, as if connected by an elastic band. Headdy can also swap his head for a special head, if he attacks a HeadCase. Depending on the symbol that the HeadCase is showing, Headdy will get a different head with a different special power.

Scattered across the levels are a number of Secret Bonus Points. These can be collected by performing a strange or skilled action, such as finding a hidden item or defeating an enemy that is difficult to reach.

By getting powerups from HeadCase, it is possible to collect 15 heads in the main levels, and three others in the flying sections. Most of them last until they wear off, or until the A button is pressed. However, Head Trip can only be removed by it wearing off after a period of time. Pin Head and the flying-level heads can only be removed by changing to another head.

Amazing game, lovely visuals, the music is nice and it's actually a hard to beat game. Very challenging. Would love to see this on XBLA.

"Xbox 360 Completed Games" Ep. 1

    The Story goes like this:

I had bought 3 games long before the 360 came out, being waiting 3 months before I was able to actually play the games first thing I did as soon as I was able to do so was to pop in PDZ (Perfect Dark Zero) the games everyone was talking about. Well, guess what, after tryin to play the game for a few weeks I finally went to the local GameStop and traded it in for Halo 1 and King Kong. I thought to myself, "what is it about FPSs that people love so much? This game sucks, is there any other game that represents the genre that it's actually good?" Obviously I've heard about Halo countless times so I gave it a try. Man that game IS good! So yes, the first game I ever finished on my 360 was Halo, a backward compatible game.  But since this Featurette is about 360 games, Halo doesn't count... does it? I had to put that up there. (I really think PDZ sucked, big time)

Peter Jackson's King Kong might not be the greatest thing ever, but at the time the game looked amazing to me, and I was actually able to play it, throughly, from end to end whithout getting super frustrated while trying. A lot of people complain that it's too easy or that it looks horrible. What can I say, I like games that don't require you to try 1000 times to get through, and the game looked great on my 42" HDTV. Loved the fact that there's no GUI (graphical user interface) (a concept adapted later on in Gears of War) and the 5.1 Surround sound just blew my mind. Funny, the way the NPCs talk made the need for a tutorial totally not needed and actually fun. That's a good thing.

Playability wise I think the game does a pretty nice job, except when you play as Kong. Not being able to control the camera at times made the whole experience painful. Sadly the game doesn't actually have any replayability value besides going for High Score, but even that doesn't give you any achievements so... Play it once, and that's about it.

The story of the game is pretty much what the movie is about so I'm not gonna go into details here, just watch the movie. Or play the game.

If I were to score this game I would give it a 6.5 out of 10.

"Games I have good memories of." Ep. 1

So back in the day, the 80's day, after being in the arcades for a while and played a couple of the old consoles (the Atari 2600 and C-64) consoles found a place in me, mainly fueled by the lack of enough quarters to keep the Arcade playing alive...

Anyway, so the time came in which me and my brother finally got ourselves a (European) Sega Master System. The system came with a game preinstalled, being that game Alex Kidd in Miracle World, it was obviously the first game we ever owned. The year was 1992 I think.

The story of the game is that Alex Kidd is looking for his brother, who was captured by the villain Janken the Great. The game was eighteen stages long and some of the bosses you faced you had to beat by playing a Rock, Paper, Scissors game. Janken the Great was the last Boss.

I remember spending countless hours trying to beat the game, reason why is because the game didn't have a save point feature so whenever you died or run out of the in-game money it would be game over.

The game is basically a Platformer, but you had a few vehicles you could use, the only ones I remember are the motorcycle and a helicopter. Man the helicopter was hard!!   (yes I know there's a boat showing on one of pictures I've uploaded but I can't remember that part of the game... :-(   The game is not too long nor too hard either so it's easy to master after playing it a few times.

I've found out (while looking for pictures) that there are other versions of Alex Kidd. Though I didn't play any of these, and just for informative purposes, they are:

    Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Alex Kidd and The Lost Stars
    Alex Kidd in High-Tech World
    Alex Kidd BMS Trial
Alex Kidd and the Enchanted Castle

Anyone played any of these? If you did, let me know your thoughts in the comments box below.

New gaming features... so to speak.

Yep, starting today I'm adding two new sections on the site.

One is the "Games I have good memories of." in which I'll talk about games I have played through out the years and I have some fond memories of.

And the second is going to be: "Xbox 360 completed games" in which obviously I'll talk about games that I have totally completed, and to which I'll give my rating of.

Both sections will be comprised of an Article (or blog), a set of pictures and, when available, a video of the gameplay.

So, even though there's no article today, I've uploaded some pictures already, check them out!

    Hope you enjoy it.
